Abstract: Introduction: Rates of hypertrophic scar formation (HTS) following burns are related to the healing time of the wound. Traditional teaching is that burns which take longer than 21 days to heal have a high rate of HTS. We aim to explore the association between healing time, skin type and HTS. Methods: A prospective study of all patients treated at a regional paediatric burns centre over a 9 month period. Data was collected at the time of injury, dressing change and final follow up. Colour photographs were taken at each stage. Scars were assessed using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS).
