The socio-economic characteristics and home background of university students

Abstract

The general aim of this study is to provide a glimpse into the home environment of a selected group of university students and to try to identify those factors which contributed to their educational progress towards beginning a University course of studies. For the purpose of this study a questionnaire was compiled to serve as the basis of a survey carried out among students who commenced their course of study at the University of Malta in February 1985. Foreign research into the influence of the home environment on school progress has also been consulted and reviewed. Tentative conclusions based on the findings of the survey are given at the end.
