Abstract: This research undertaken from hitherto untapped primary sources, the Gozitan School Logbooks, and buttressed by a number of secondary sources, is divided into two parts: Part A delves into the social, cultural and health aspects of Gozo in the first half of the twentieth century while Part B examines in some detail the educational aspects of the sister Island. Topics delved into include the effect of World War I and II on Gozo, health awareness among the people, cultural and recreational life in schools, school structure and personnel and curricula, teaching methods and forms of assessment in use. One can feel throughout the strong influence of the Church as well, of course, as that of the State. The presented work is supplemented by a number of Appendices including three interviews with former educators in Gozo.
