Abstract: The introduction of Information Technology in almost all aspects of modern society led to the introduction of computers in schools. This study examined children's and teachers' perceptions about the introduction of computers in Year 1 classrooms. It also focused on how computers are being used in classrooms in order to establish how this resource is influencing teaching and learning. Interviews with 8 teachers and 180 Year 1 children were conducted to obtain the required data. The research was conducted in two state primary schools. A series of classroom observations were included to find out about the use of computers in classrooms. The data were analysed for the whole sample, gender, school and class differences. Results indicated that most teachers agree with the introduction of computers in Year 1 classrooms, although they need more training. Results also showed that computers are not being integrated in the lessons but are being used as time fillers or during breaks.
