Social involvement of foreign students at the University of Malta

Abstract

This dissertation will explore the social involvement and the integration in Maltese life, of foreign students studying at the University of Malta. This is a quantitative study supported by relevant data gathered from 250 international students following a full-time course at the University of Malta. Participants' view of the extent of socialisation are measured by a nineteen item questionnaire directed to students, and interviews with authoritative personalities in the international students affairs. The situation investigated explores the way international students are guided upon their arrival, the reason for choosing Malta to pursue their studies and the extent of integration and participation in social activities. The research results suggest that although matters are taken care of by the International Office, local students need to change their attitudes completely towards international students, student organisations need to be more active and University services upgraded for the benefit of all foreign students.
