Decision making : Year six students choice of subjects for form 1

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore students' choice of subjects in year six by reviewing current practices regarding subject choice in two different colleges in Malta. Based on constructivists' principles, this research takes a grounded approach: the current situation in two different Maltese state colleges is investigated, finding out participants' meanings through semi structured interviews with four Heads of primary schools, two college counsellors, four guidance teachers, telephone interviews with fifteen parents, four group interviews with year six students and non-participant observations carried out during the yearly option exercise. Effective practices are recommended stemming directly from the participants' experiences and meanings. From the findings it transpires that ten-year-old students are not capable to carry out a wise decision independently. Year six students are lacking decision-making skills which should enable them to choose wisely. Students in fact, seem to be dependent largely on others to take their decision. The study puts forward recommendations on the effectiveness of the current system regarding subject choice, strengthening the good points and working on those that need to improve to better meet students' needs. The philosophy which places the child in the centre of the learning process needs to be embedded in all sectors of education and practiced by all stakeholders who have at heart the overall well-being of every student. A holistic approach is being proposed highlighting a shift from preparing students for one particular choice to a broader approach that emphasises the development of skills.
