dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this study was to investigate the use of computers as a teaching and learning resource in primary education. A framework was developed which illustrates what happens when children work with computers in groups and to check its relevance to classroom practice. The study was carried out in a Church primary school where observations of nine-year old children working with two software programs were conducted. Data was collected through tape recording and fieldnotes. Interviews with the children and the teachers at St. Monica School were also included in our study. The dissertation commenced with an outline on the current situation in Malta as regards the introduction of l.T. in primary schools. Both opinion and research literature on l.T. were reviewed. Chapter two focused on the use of the computer as a teaching and learning resource. Chapter three, then gave a detailed account of how the qualitative research was carried out and a description of the two software programs used in the study. Chapters four and five provided an analysis of the salient characteristics of group work with computers and the nature of children's talk and activity whilst working at the computer. The last Chapter summarised the findings and offered suggestions about important aspects which emerged. | en_GB |
