dc.description.abstract | Maltese is the national language of the Maltese archipelago, situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It has been recognized as an official language of the European Union. The Maltese language is derived from Arabic introduced in Malta and Gozo sometime between AD 870 and 1090 during the Arab occupation. It is closely related to the North African dialect of Arabic. Maltese has developed independently and has become a unique language influenced by the Romance and Anglo-Saxon languages, particularly southern Italian and English. See the Resources section for materials pertain- ing to Maltese. | en_GB |
