The size factor in the financial management of Maltese Micro and SMEs : a study

Abstract

The concepts and ideas behind this dissertation were to understand the use of financial management by Maltese micro and SMEs, and if the use or otherwise of financial management depends on the size of the enterprises. This dissertation will explore various elements of financial management to illustrate which elements are used in relation to the enterprise's size and its operations, and how such elements can overcome the enterprise's barriers and be successful. This dissertation will start by analysing the common factors associated with micro and SMEs, with particular reference to Maltese enterprises, as well as a comparing of the common characteristics pertaining to large enterprises. The discussion will move on to the real scenario of Maltese micro and SMEs with respect to the use and contribution of financial management, and the effect of financial management and its support in the success or failure of these enterprises. Secondary data was mainly used for the Literature Review section, where reference was made to numerous online documents, journals, books, Maltese newspapers and other media. The findings of this study were based on the primary data collected from surveys and interviews held with Maltese micro and SMEs, as well as other professionals in their line of business and in relation to this area of study. In conclusion, this study concentrates on the factors that affect the financial management of Maltese micro and SMEs and how these factors can be tuned in line with the size factor of the enterprise.
