Abstract: In this case study I describe how I guided a young girl into finding ways of overcoming her reading difficulties. The aim of my work was to restore self-confidence to the child and instill in her an interest in print which would eventually lead to a love for books and consequent reading. In this dissertation I have explained the most applied teaching-reading methods. I have then outlined various theoretical views concerning children's early acquaintance with print. The Case Study is then presented as a development in three phases namely, getting to know the child, diagnosing her reading difficulties and providing activities leading to the girl's eventual ability to read in Maltese. An analysis of the girl's performance led me to conclude that in her case, socio-cultural support was needed to help her overcome most of her difficulties.
