Abstract: As science is gaining more importance in advanced societies than ever before, it is imperative that our country also exploits the scientific abilities and achievements of its students, in order to keep up with the rest of the developed world. The students of today are the potential scientists of tomorrow and therefore, it is, necessary to ensure that these students have the best scientific education. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the students that opt to study Physics at Advanced level are being adequately prepared for a smooth transition to University level courses with the subject as special entry requirement. The effectiveness of the syllabus and the assessment system are two important factors that affect the students' success in this transition. In the light of this statement, the aim of this study was to find out whether the present Advanced Matriculation Physics syllabus and examination are fulfilling the students' and teachers' needs and expectations. This study reveals that there are both positive and negative attitudes towards the subject at Sixth Form level. Results show that a better link needs to be established between what is being taught at post-secondary and University level. It is also clear that, for the majority of students and lecturers, the performance in the final examination is attributed more importance than the actual understanding, and appreciation of the beauty of the subject and learning its basic principles. Everything leads to the need of indispensable amendments to both the syllabus and examination system, if we want to guarantee the best academic performance of our science students at University level.
