Abstract: The influence of information can begin before the first shots are fired and last long into the post-conflict, reconciliation and reconstruction phases. Therefore there is a need to give special attention to the increasing centrality of the information and the role of the mass media in the pre-, during and post-conflict periods. In this respect, main concern of this thesis is information control in other words control on the flow of information as a fact, as a need and as a threat to the freedom of information in the conflict process. Whilst the relationship between the media and the public opinion as a key motive behind the conflicts is being questioned, the ties between the media and the power holders are also analysed. Combining with the related media effect theories the critical role of the media in forging both war and peace is examined. Furthermore, in order to elaborate better on the subject, a case study on the position of the media in the Former Yugoslavian conflicts is involved. The analysis is made depending on several selected incidents experienced and/or projects currently being experienced. This case study also provides the possibility to question the theories and allegations on the role of the media in conflict.
