Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the contribution outdoor sports activities can have on the tourism industry in Gozo. The research question is to analyse whether the niche of sports tourism, in particular outdoor sports, can contribute positively to the development of the industry. Questionnaires were distributed to visitors and tourists visiting Gozo, 97 questionnaires were collected and analysed in order to determine the demand for this niche, the perception of the visitor of the state of outdoor sports activities in Gozo and their views on Gozo as being a hub for outdoor sports activities. In-depth interviews were also carried out with 13 different stakeholders within the industry. The different stakeholders were identified as being people responsible of the sports sector, the tourism sector of Gozo and sports tourism as a niche market. Results of this study have shown that Gozo has the potential to be a hub for outdoor sports activities as the main facilities needed for this niche in order to develop are ready available. In addition, the data gathered indicated that further development of the niche of outdoor sports would be beneficial for the tourism industry in Gozo as it will increase the percentage to visitors, especially in the shoulder months. Nonetheless, several limitations were highlighted, namely the lack communication and awareness of the niche among the local and international markets. The insights obtained from the analysis generated a number of recommendations and suggestions that can help this niche develop sustainably.
