'EkoSkola' and student diversity : its impact on academic, physical and cultural diversity

Abstract

The present heterogeneous society sets student diversity high on the agenda of schools. The question is to what extent is a quality education provided for all students. In this research the 'EkoSkola' committee was used as a setting to delve into its role in promoting student diversity. Diversity envisages a wide spectrum. However for the research purpose academic, cultural and physical diversity were taken into consideration. A qualitative approach was adopted consisting of passive observation sessions and semi-structured interviews with all the students in the committee, a parent whose child is part of the committee and the teacher involved in the committee. Following these interviews, an informal meeting was held with the senior management team discussing the findings. The research gives insight on the skills acquired through participation and how this affects the student's everyday life. These include empowerment to make a change, leadership skills, communication skills, tolerance and compromise and others. Unfortunately, a major lacuna was found, that there is low participation in the committee. Even though open to all students, the committee is very homogenous with students coming from Form 4 Junior Lyceum classes only. What is the reason behind this? Can the school be of help to further implement participation in the committee? Policies and activities are to be implemented to ensure a serene and welcoming environment for all children to use their potential to the full.
