Some aspects of the rights of juvenile detainees

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is succinctly to analyse the Maltese situation with regards to juvenile delinquents. Interviews and first-hand analysis of the juvenile justice system from referral to punishment have been of immense help in attaining the established goals. This whole edifice is further strengthened by briefly referring to the extent situation in Israel. It tries to portray the reality that although incarceration is abhorrent, at times it is a necessary evil. The only certainty encountered is that much more has to be done with a view of achieving the optimum structures for the benefit of those who have to pass through this juvenile justice regime. Change is imperative but it must be well directed.
