Abstract: Vitale is indissolubly bound with the history of the insurrection of the Maltese against the French in 1798. A Notary by profession, Vitale responded to his country's call in the hour of need and left his peaceful office life for the battlefield. lt was under his direction that the first operations against the French were successfully brought to a close in a matter of hours by the capture of Notabile. A chronicler asserts that this was due mostly to the personal qualities of the leader.
