Abstract: The thematic approach to learning is an interesting and stimulating way which appeals to children, while helping them think and learn in a creative way. In this dissertation an attempt is made to highlight the main features of the thematic approach and how this can be implemented in the primary classroom. It mainly deals with five aspects of the approach, namely, the theory behind the thematic approach, the school environment, the teacher, the child, the curriculum, planning and assessment. It includes a literature review and also an empirical part, where the extent to which this approach is being implemented in San Anton School is investigated. As part of this research in the said school, I have observed teaching and learning in Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes and discussed with teachers and the Headteacher about the approach and the school.
