Abstract: | This dissertation attempts to show how conceptual and procedural aspects of historical knowledge, together with on-site visits, help students to gain a more complete education. This dissertation also aims at discussing the current situation as regards history outside the classroom in Malta and at suggesting changes which could encourage Maltese teachers to adopt such an educational approach. In the first chapter of this dissertation some main reasons about the importance of history are outlined, while the second chapter briefly explains the three constitutive components of historical knowledge, with a special- focus upon the conceptual aspect. Important debates with regards to some key concepts like evidence and truth, which are essential for the organisation of the other forms of knowledge, are explored together with resulting educational implications. In the third chapter it is argued that teaching methodologies which involve historical sources and excursions are best suited for the teaching of conceptual and procedural knowledge. Some places of historical interest are considered together: with related teaching methodologies and potential benefits. The opinions of Maltese state secondary school history teachers and students with regards to history- outside. the classroom are analysed in the fourth chapter. In chapter five, future prospects and possibilities as regards the teaching of history outside the classroom in Malta are discussed and suggestions with reference to changes needed within and outside the Maltese educational system are made. |
