Abstract: The notion of rare diseases was rarely heard of twenty years ago. As of the 21st century, there has been a notable increase in awareness about rare diseases and interest in research and development of orphan medicines. The European Organisation for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) defines a rare disease as “a disease that occurs infrequently or rarely in the general population” in 2005.
