Abstract: | This study analyses the impact of prison on inmates from a sociological perspective. In particular it analyses how inmates' reform in prison is perceived by both experts in the field and ex-inmates, how and what is utilized in this reformative process and what impact it may have on the success or failure of the inmates' reform. Main findings include respondents' definition of reform as a way to achieve new opportunities. It was further recognized that better conditions for its applicability need to be put into practice, namely a conductive environment and a positive relationship between the prison staff, the inmates' families and the inmates themselves. Despite their perceived benefits of the reform, it was acknowledged that much more work could be done to improve the current inmates' reformative situation. The main reasons for this were noted as being the lack of familiarity with the reform process in prison, through education, work opportunities and family suppo1i, are handled and an absence of conditions that enhance its use. |
