Peacekeeping and human rights' implications : the Kosovo case

Abstract

The evolution that peacekeeping witnessed all through history until our present days foreshadows the rising complexities that it embodied. Peacekeeping missions appear to be broader in their objectives. Evidently, this development entails rising challenges. The use of force and the humanitarian dimension require clear mandates, adequate consensus as well as sufficient contributions from the international actors. Peacekeeping missions turns out to be more comprehensive and multidimensional. The more a peacekeeping mission is able to manage these challenges, the higher the probability to resolve conflicts successfully. Consequently, resolving conflicts means the success of a peacekeeping mission in protecting human rights. Kosovo embodies a practical approach for examining the feasibility of the United Nations' comprehensive peacekeeping mission in restoring peace in the region and in preventing the further violations of the rights of all the people in Kosovo. For instance, NATO's intervention and the contradictions that embodied the legality of its intervention added to the complexities of the UN peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. The success of this mission can be assessed through its results in preserving a comprehensive and acceptable peace for all the conflicting sides in Kosovo and in granting them their rights, which they lost during the ethnic conflict.
