How is the nation-state paradigm changing in the globalised system?

Abstract

I have always been fascinated by the working dynamics of the overarching structures governing international relations. The nation state paradigm is one of those important structures and sustains the global political environment we live in. The core morals and values of the nation state paradigm have a very interesting historical evolution which is tied to the most fundamental philosophical and epistemological changes in early modem times. This thesis will attempt firstly to trace the origins of the nation state and analyze why the nation state paradigm has formed an integral part of humanities existence for more than four centuries. This thesis will question the relevance and permanence of such a system of governance in today's world. Both the 'nation' and the 'state' part of the equation will be put to the test against the fast changing realities of the globalised environment. Globalisation is another topic which will be analysed in certain depth. This will be done always in relation to the existence of the nation state as the primary form of centralised and legitimate authority on the international stage. Although all aspects of globalisation will be analysed this thesis will put more emphasis on economic globalisation as being the primary transcendental force of our time which is fundamentally changing several preconceptions which for centuries have formed part of our socio-political environment.
