This paper seeks to explore how the often unsynthesized process of urbanization and the resulting state of urban environments has led to the unsustainable development course of both the individual and the state, for cities in the Global North and South. The main focus of this paper, however, concentrates on cities in the Global South which are growing at unprecedented rates. The purpose of this thesis is to uncover the procedures and components of urbanization that trace the historical processes that have led us to today's problems and challenges. It is also to identify appropriate responses to the myriad of problems confronting contemporary metropolitan areas. In addition, looking at the role of the state will be used in part to explain the conditions posed today on the individual. Furthermore, there are a number of questions for which answers will be provided for, such as: How has the process of urbanization left rapidly growing cities victims of unsustainable development? How are governments and municipalities successfully adapting sustainable development measures to deal with the challenges posed by urbanization? How can rapidly growing cities enlarge in a way that is not destructive and is sustainable? What type of assistance and legal measures have been made to deal with the resulting consequences? What is being done to prevent them from continuing?en_GB
