Abstract: This dissertation explores the nature of the traditional and the new middle classes, their social formations and their separate identities. This is done by analyzing the Historical socio-economic changes that took place during the period 1880-1939. These changes came about as a result of the impact caused by Britain's Imperial requirements. The social, political and cultural features which separated these two main middle class groupings, in relation to Britain's colonial rule, form the analytical basis of this dissertation.
