Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the working capital management in Maltese co-operatives over the years 2007/11. This will be achieved by ascertaining the working capital components and performing ratio analysis in order to identify any improvements or otherwise in the liquidity position of co-operatives over the period. This will contribute in providing recommendations for working capital improvements. Design: The dissertation objectives were accomplished through data elicited from financial statements, for the years 2007/11, and data collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with experts (six) and co-operative representatives (thirteen). Findings: This study ascertained that the major components of current assets were the trade and other receivables and cash, while the major component of current liabilities was the trade and other payables. It was found that generally, the sector had a greater impact on the components than the year. This also applies to liquidity since fluctuations over the years were not significant. Furthermore, controls over current assets and liabilities can be improved and there are different views about the possibility of a local co-operative bank. Conclusion: This study concludes that since co-operatives differ by sectors, the institutional bodies, particularly Koperattivi Malta, should treat co-operatives accordingly and provide tailor-made training. This would enable the Committees of Management to understand their responsibilities and be willing to continue to learn. Value: Hopefully, this study will enhance the awareness about the importance of adequate working capital management within local co-operatives and the awareness about the need for monitoring the co-operatives' liquidity position to avoid potential problems. The recommendations include improving the effectiveness of education and training, helping co-operatives to monitor their liquidity position, the provision of free/subsidised professional services, and the setting up a Credit Union.en_GB
