Abstract: As their evolution was prefigured in a number of seminal projects that marked the last decade of the twentieth century, architectural diagrams have often been characterized as instrumental tools that have a direct influence on the dynamics of the design process. Nevertheless their widespread use in contemporary architectural practice often reveals a significant discrepancy between theory and practice. Instead of a coherent diagrammatic process, diagrams are often employed as graphic illustrations to outline pre-established abstractions in a compelling visual format. As a critical reaction, this study considers the subject of diagrams in relation to 'process' and 'technique', issues which are invariably linked to the way this tool is understood and ultimately utilized. Considering the significant points of convergence in the application of diagrams in art and architectural design, this subject is explored through a comparison of relevant working methods in both fields. This study therefore illustrates a number of potential interpretations and adaptations of techniques pertaining to diagrammatic design. This exploratory account is meant to suggest the possibility for a more holistic approach to diagramming that is capable of engaging with the different aspects and demands that are involved in the creation of an architectural project.
