The idea behind this dissertation is to explore the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and the need for school leaders to shift through leadership styles. This research seeks to understand the Heads of Schools’ perspective about the components that shape Emotional Intelligence in relation to the way their school is led, via a variety of leadership styles. Thus, this study aims at getting to terms with how EI offers the necessary aptitude for a leader to rapidly select the appropriate style according to the situation at hand. A qualitative approach through semi structured interviews was selected in order to conduct this research. Nine Heads of State Schools were interviewed. The data collection provided key areas which were represented by major themes through a thematic analysis approach. This study paved the way for six major themes, namely; (1) the emphasised importance of communication, (2) opting for people oriented leadership styles, (3) shifting through various styles for different circumstances, (4) the understanding and daily practices of EI, (5) the self in collaboration with others, (6) creating a positive environment. The necessity to be aware and acknowledge what makes up the school, communicate well with others and evaluate actions, proves to help leaders effectively practice EI and smoothly shift through any of the leadership styles. Thus confirming the need that an effective leader uses EI to flexibly and rapidly switch among styles according to the need aiming for the best results. It is essential to recognise the importance of training and investment in the Head of schools’ wellbeing, so as to encourage better practices of EI.en_GB
