dc.description.abstract | This study develops an understanding of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for middle management leaders (MMLs). In light of evidence showing that educational leadership is crucial in the effectiveness of schools (Bush, 2007, 2011; Pont, Nusche & Hopkins, 2008; Peters, 2015), the research project entailed an exploratory study intended to find out more about CPD provision for MMLs and its effect on their role as agents of change in their schools. In particular, this study aimed to come up with a set of principles and an effective process for CPD that addressed the professional needs of MMLs. A case study using a mixed methods approach was the chosen methodology for this study. The case study included a focus group interview, a web-based questionnaire, a series of CPD sessions using collaborative action research, and one-to-one semi-structured interviews. The study was conducted with MMLs deployed in both state and church primary schools in Gozo. The findings show the complexity of the role of MMLs. The notion of being lifelong learners does not appear to have, as yet, been internalised by middle management leaders. One reason for this could be that MMLs rarely have professional development opportunities which target their specific needs. Therefore, this study suggests that a framework for CPD is urgently required for the transformation of these leaders’ professional roles. The evidence shows that support structures and collegial opportunities for ongoing meetings among MMLs within and across schools are needed. | en_GB |
