Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to show the authoress' ability to depict so realistically the picturesque Sardinian countryside with its traditions in such an expressive narrative style. The art of Grazia Deledda consists of portraying reality; narrating a way of life which is part of her and yet common to all. Her success lies not merely in depicting the Sardinian way of life, but rather in bringing out its humanity. The authoress' native, sad, pessimistic and painful surroundings form the background of many of her works, which project this tragic and barbaric atmosphere. She describes the sorrowful and violent, daily, bloody events, which occur in her home town Nuoro and the surrounding villages.
