Abstract: | This study sought to understand the implications of cultural tourism on a local community and the public space that it calls its own. By using the local fishing community that operates from Xatt is-Sajjieda, Spinola Bay, St.Julian's, as a case study, this research provides an in-depth analysis of the daily life within the space, and how it has developed over time, as a result of different planning decisions that were influenced by global, 'external forces'. By using the concepts of 'the symbolic economy', 'disneyfication' and 'everyday life', concepts which define the relationship between 'culture', 'product' and 'space', Xatt is-Sajjieda was explored from the point of view of the everyday user - who 'generates' culture - and the point of view of the authorities - who often view culture, simply, as a marketing tool. Thus through a mixture of on-site observations, policy analysis and interviews, the study puts forward a discussion on the lessons that can be learnt from studying a traditional, local community within a space that is infused with symbols, meanings and patterns, in contrast with the planning decisions that influence the space in an attempt to help it to keep up with the fluid characteristics of modern society. |
