This dissertation emerges as an attempt at visualising the imagination in a search for structure where there seemingly is none. In investigating the parallels between finding form in our thoughts and finding form in our reality, the design process is approached from a cartographer's point of view, charting processes as reported by designers from across a range of fields. The stream of thoughts driving a process is recorded and visualised, constructing mappings of the mind throughout the act of creating an exercise of thinking and doing. Through the development of a model for imaginative movement, this dissertation begins to observe the intrinsic and extrinsic forces which shape and reshape our thoughts across time, inquiring into their implications on our pursuit of form and meaning. The research looks to develop a new form of map, conceived of as a companion rather than guide, a visualisation tool to monitor and direct imaginative movement and thought within the design process. The charting system developed through this research aims at endowing designers with new levels of awareness and control of their processes, improving design thinking to precipitate new ideas and concept formation.en_GB
