Abstract: In this work, the core principles and characteristics used in the design for reconfigurability where were applied in the design, development, and application of Machine Vision systems. The designed machine vision system was then used to specifically inspect O-rings by gauging the inner and outer dimensions. Moreover, the typical components and parameters typically used in machine vision were thoroughly explored and defined. This understanding along with the concept of reconfigurability were used to define one system capable of carrying out a variety of machine vision application on a variety of components. Additionally, three different types of software, including both on and off-the shelf software, were looked into to develop algorithms for machine vision software, which were ultimately used to validate the proof of concept that a reconfigurable machine vision can in fact be used for machine vision applications. Furthermore, an algorithm specifically for gauging applications of the inner and outer diameter of a polymer-based O-ring was developed. This ultimately rendered promising results which along with further optimisation can be used for industrial applications. Lastly the system, which was developed, achieved the goal of being capable of the initial objectives whilst keeping the costs relatively low.
