Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of children on their parents' environmental behaviour. The intention of this study was to outline the social and educational factors effecting intergenerational influence. This research made use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. An extensive sample of parents was asked to fill a one-page questionnaire that provided data for a general overview of the situation in Malta. In-depth interviews with a more restricted sample of parents were used to follow the dynamics and characteristics of intergenerational influence. Furthermore, difficulties and factors facilitating or hindering intergenerational influence were identified. The evidence obtained showed that Maltese children tend to be the major influence on their parents with regards to the environment. Factors such as exposure to environmental education programmes and discussions between child and parent had an impact on the level of intergenerational influence. The study concluded that environmental intergenerational influence in Malta is present and is determined mainly by the engagement in authentic experiences, contact time between child and parent as well as parents' support to child. The study also identified areas for future research and recommendations about ways to improve intergenerational influence.
