Abstract: The following dissertation investigates the design process in architecture. Through theoretical research the design process is broken down into three parts; method, tools and techniques. This information is used to create a framework in which one can better comprehend their approach to design: before, after and during the process. The framework's validity in analysing completed projects is tested through an analysis of multiple case studies. The framework is then tested by applying it to an architectural project to investigate its effectiveness when used before and during the design process. The analysis reveals that by framing the design process, one is able to isolate the different aspects involved in the thinking process, giving the designer a higher level of control. This control can ultimately Improve design thinking and make the design process more effective, efficient and successful when developing concepts. Furthermore, the research Investigates the impact that the understanding of design processes and architectural concepts can have on the creation of architecture that embodies meaning for a contemporary society.
