Abstract: The word 'influence' in the title of this thesis is used in terms of F.W. Stokoe's definition in his preface to 'German Influence in the English Romantic Period', "Influence is a modification of consciousness by action from without; and such action to become effective must have had the way prepared for it by previous tendencies in the conscious concerned. The foreign example serves to justify and encourage the expression of the native aptitude".
