Abstract: In the past, books on the history of architecture have seldom been concerned with anything other than monumental building. Consequently there has been little published information on the historical evolution of house forms and dwelling patterns. The situation in Malta is not uncommon wi.th that of many other European countries. History has endowed the Maltese Islands with a rich and unique collection of buildings which have naturally come to be recognised and studied by the architectural historian.
