Abstract: In his Life of Shelley, Hogg records how he and Shelley first became acquainted with Italian Literature in the years 1813/14. Prior to this, they both seem to have been completely ignorant of the Italian language as well as its literature.. In fact Hogg describes an amusing incident which took place when he and Shelley first met at Oxford in 1810. The two young men heatedly discussed the respective merits of Italian and German literature, and would have gone on arguing had not Shelley finally admitted - and so did Hogg - that he knew nothing of either.
