Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to carry out an analysis of the development of relations between the United States and the European Union before and after the conflict in Iraq in a bid to establish both common positions and divergent approaches to same issues. Reference is also made to the developing nuclear crisis in Iran in an attempt to outline the different approaches and their effect on the transatlantic relat1onsh1p. This review should provide the necessary findings to determine the way forward of future transatlantic relations in the light of new and continuing tensions in a globalized scenario. This dissertation is divided into four chapters. The first chapter entitled "Understanding the Transatlantic Relationship" attempts to provide a sound background to the transatlantic relation per se. This shall focus on the development of the relationship with special reference to the post-cold war years, the development of the respective foreign policies, conflicts and other issues which have shaped the relationship.
