The resettlement and repatriation process of irregular immigrant. The case of Malta : what are the political challenges to Malta's policies on resettlement and repatriation?

Abstract

Repatriation and resettlement programmes have consequentially been a derived process following the arrival of irregular immigrants. In Malta the phenomenon of irregular immigration has quickly reached a climax due to the country's limited resources and high population density. In Malta's case, the importance to effectively implement such mechanisms provides durable solutions and an alleviation of felt strains on Malta's geographical limitations, reaching sustainable solutions that reduce the existing repatriation and resettlement stalemate. Consequently, this dissertation explores the different challenges encountered by the country's administration in implementing either process effectively. Furthermore, this dissertation presents detailed information about the international obligations that exist be fore carrying out any initiative. Moreover, this study reveals the perceptions of the various actors who arc directly or indirectly involved in the implementation of these programmes which involve diplomatic relations with other states to discuss existing and pending policies. This study is aimed to provide a clear explanation of the mentioned procedures whilst presenting a clear picture of the existing situation regarding resettlement and repatriation within its text explaining how these central issues are perceived by the involved actors.
