dc.description.abstract | This dissertation serves as an aid to answer difficulties which may be encountered by translators and interpreters and also all those involved in the local building scene when dealing with this field and will strive to make up for gaps and misunderstandings in Maltese Vernacular Masonry Construction. The aim is that with the help of this glossary, translators and interpreters and all those involved within the sphere of the local building scene have a better and wider understanding of the many intricacies that constitute this sector that is so relevant to Maltese culture, society and economy. The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to have terms present in the Maltese language translated into English and vice-versa. The need was felt to add definitions of the terms used in English and Maltese since they are particularly helpful for the user, ranging from professionals in the building sector such as architects, draughtsmen to manual labourers including masons and sculptors amongst others. This will enable a better understanding of the meanings of these terms, how and when and in which context they are made use of. Additionally, any misunderstandings that may arise in the different usage of the same word are clarified as much as possible through this work. This glossary explains further three particular aspects: (i) Building terms e.g. 'qama' - measurement for rocks with the arms held out wide; (ii) The difference between word meanings e.g. 'kantun' and 'cangun'; 'xorok' and 'xriek'; (iii)The difference in word meanings that differ from one location to another in Malta and Gozo e.g. 'zonqor' and 'qawwi' have slightly different meanings. | en_GB |
