Abstract: | The purpose of this work is to acquaint the reader with a general overview of the issues and challenges confronting NATO from the Mediterranean Basin. It also serves as a starting point to reference the internal structural changes of the Alliance in the wake of the Soviet Dissolution and the emerging security environment. By presenting the challenges posed by NATO's southern flank, alongside the policy and structural adjustments of the Alliance, I hope to convey to the reader the degree to which NATO has compensated in the new security environment as well as the need (if any) for further adjustment. As such, the work can be divided into the following segments: Part 1 introduces the context for integration and answers the fundamental question: what was the threat to regional security prompting sovereign nations to form a regional defensive alliance based on political and military cooperation? Moreover, Part 1 familiarizes the reader with the structural framework of the Alliance and policy and decision-making bodies (chapter 3) that implement and enforce the Alliance Mandate (chapter 2). Part 2 briefly treats the Soviet dissolution (chapter 4) while outlining in more detail, the structural adjustments of the Alliance in light of the new security environment (chapter 5). This includes major institutional partnerships and the various forms of cooperation they espouse (chapters 6). As a natural extension of stability and as a means of enhancing security, NATO will enlarge (chapter 7). This has tremendous implications for the Mediterranean as the locus of security concerns shifts to the south. |
