Personalized search engine

Abstract

With the possibility of Web Publishing more information and web-accessible documents are readily available on the web; this has lead to the rise of Internet search engines like Alta Vista, Excite, Google etc. A search engine allows the user to ask tor content regarding specific criteria, usually by matching the content to a give word or phrase, it would then return a list of items that match that criteria. This can sometimes result in highly inefficient searches. So what if the searches are more personalized? The more the search engine knows about your past searches and your interests as an individual, the better the results for the search would be. Personalized search engines will eventually lead to intelligent systems that will learn from users and adapt the level of personalization at the time of the search. In this project we shall see in detail the need for personalized search engines. Such a system shall be developed. The system holds the users' preference, in a 'my favorites' kind of list. The user would be able to add or remove these preferences. Preferences would be available m a list that the user can modify on request. The application would connect to Google and return the best rated links for each entry in the preferences list. The user would also be able to add the sites proposed to their favorites. Additionally the system would suggest similar links to those that the user has chosen as his favorites.
