Managing areas of cultural significance in Rabat, Malta

Abstract

In this dissertation, the author discusses aspects affecting the management of areas of cultural significance in Rabat, Malta. The dissertation includes the sources of literature referring to Rabat. Reference is made to literature dating back to the seventeenth century and also to more recent publications. Reference is also made to literature which discusses the locality and its sites of cultural significance during the different eras. A number of issues that directly impact the cultural heritage in this locality are highlighted. During the fieldwork, the method used was that of qualitative research through face-to face interviews with various stakeholders and interested parties, whereby specific questions were asked to determine the opinions held by the people interviewed. The main issues were those of finance, education, building development and ownership, and other aspects affecting the management of cultural heritage in Rabat. From the findings, it is clear that the relevant authorities focus more on the importance of Malta's cultural heritage than was the case in previous years. Through greater awareness and information, the general public now places more emphasis on the importance of Maltese cultural heritage. However, certain issues still need to be effectively dealt with. This is only feasible through discussion with the authorities and the various parties responsible for such heritage. The author concludes by bringing the various issues mentioned in the discussion to an end and by presenting a number of recommendations which could be considered in an attempt to overcome such issues and to ensure better management of Rabat's sites according to their cultural significance.
