Title: Identity formation and the 'other' in the Dead sea scrolls
Authors: Cilia Werdmolder, Rachel
Keywords: Dead Sea scrolls

Group identity
Issue Date: 2013
Abstract: The sectarian texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls hint at a number of methods used to construct and sustain sectarian identity. The identity of the group behind the Dead Sea Scrolls was strongly linked to its function as the true Israel, which was to atone for and purify the land, and so it was imperative that this identity was continuously enforced. This dissertation explores four primary methods of identity formation: the use of language, the vilification of the 'Other,' discipline, and ritual, with particular emphasis on the role of the 'Other' in sectarian self-identity.
