Abstract: | Before the advent of modernism, ornament was seldom thought of as separate from architecture. Almost all buildings had some sort of ornament, and it did not occur to either the architect or client that one could do without. This unity of architecture and ornament could encompass the whole street elevation of a building, from the general articulation of the facade to every little detail involved. Even a lintel spanning a simple opening was expected to enhance the facade with its own decoration. It is not enough to describe ornament or decoration merely by saying that it lends grace and beauty to architecture. If we consider a more flexible definition, through its decoration, a building is an architectural expression reflecting the social stability of the people. The main facade, being the showcase of the building evokes a sense of pride in the community. |
