Abstract: George Elliot visited Germany several times. She started on her first journey shortly after her union with Lewes in August 1854, visiting Cologne, Coblenz, Frankfurt and Weimar. Weimar, the Town of Herder, Weiland, Schiller and Goethe, was regarded at the beginning of the nineteenth century as the Athens of the North.
