Abstract: This dissertation explores the way space is perceived within homes. By challenging the way space is often dealt with in Maltese homes, the research tries to generate an alternate way of how homes are understood in terms of space. By questioning themes such as necessity, privacy, function, possession and image, the research outlines the determinants which affect the allocation of space in homes. The main purpose behind this research is to outline reasons as to why homes are often spatially designed similarly in a Maltese context. It attempts to help the reader acknowledge that when new design challenges in housing are posed, they can be licked in ways which are often overlooked, particularly in terms of conceptualizing space in homes.
