Abstract: Living in a small country we are easily influenced by actions of countries larger than ours. Without knowledge we can be led into thinking that these actions are the way forward, but this may not always be the case. It is well known that land reclamation in China far exceeds that carried out in the Netherlands. China has adopted a "free for all" approach when it comes to reclaiming land from the sea. Coastal areas are regarded as white sheets of paper where imagination is the limit. Misinformed authorities may think that this is the way forward, but without guiding processes, such an endeavour may create haphazard use of spaces and elevates harm caused to the environment, population and natural habitats alike. Malta's population 1s on the rise and soon enough, land reclamation will seem to be a tenable option for tleveloper::i when our cities become overcrowded .:md building !;:ind is cxh;:iustcd. A roadmap, or as it is being referred to in the text as a framework, of guiding management practices will be put forward. l his may be conceived as a step-by-step guide indicating elements that need to be considered in a land reclamation project, whilst still providing flexibility in thoughts and actions.
