Abstract: Since the Second World War, the elimination of torture has been a serious concern of the international community. In effect, a number of documents on an international level have been drafted aiming to bring an end to any forms of inhuman behaviours. The same approach has been adopted on regional levels. The first part of the present study demonstrates in brief the historical background of the practice of torture und displays the existing international and European Declaration and Treaties, which emerged throughout history. Further more it deals with the work of established organs responsible to monitor the implementation of the principles stipulated by the above documents. An epigrammatic commentary on the effectiveness of the existing mechanisms will also be asserted. The second part of this study aims lo give u vivid image of the situation regarding torture within the Republic of Turkey having as a main source the reports and judgments of the organs established by the relevant Conventions to which Turkey's a member State. An evaluation of Turkey's attitude to the problem will also be attempted, reaching a final conclusion on what should the Country focus on in order to reach a torture-free society.
