Abstract: The demand for more bandwidth has increased exponentially over the past couple of decades. Moreover, domestic consumers of bandwidth hungry multimedia services want more bandwidth at a lower cost, and with good transmission quality, delivered to their homes. The aim of this thesis was to design an optical broadband access network architecture that satisfies the demands imposed by these applications. A colourless, hybrid passive optical network (PON) architecture was designed and studies to satisfy these demands in the access loop. Furthermore, the cost of the system can be reduced by approximately €1000.
